My understanding of leather working is that a machine is required to first perforate the leather due to the thickness and hardness of the skin and then waxed thread is used to thread the holes by hand.
In traditional hand leather working a hand tool (a chisel that cuts six holes a time) is used and then the waxed thread. That thread is a lot thicker than the thread above and the pattern it creates – because the holes cut for leather have a definite shape – gives it a specific look.

It has clearly been sewn with a sewing machine. Is that ‘handcrafted’ now?
