Daenerys Targaryen is the Best hope for Westeros but the Worst Manager in Real Life

“You have a good claim: a title, a birthright. But you have something more than that: you may cover it up and deny it, but you have a gentle heart. You would be not only respected and feared, you would be loved. Someone who can rule and should rule. Centuries come and go without a person like that coming into the world. There are times that I look at you, and I still can’t believe you’re real.” – Ser Jorah Mormont to Daenerys Targaryen

Ser Jorah believes wholeheartedly in Queen Daenerys. He’s taken in by her passion & idealism and while those qualities make for inspirational leaders, idealism is for children and a child is not fit to govern an empire. As we follow her journey from mere Khaleesi to a Queen in her own right, we have seen her aptitude for quick study – she learns to use sexual pleasure to exact greater respect from her husband Khal Drogo but everything else since, has been dependent on turns of good fortune. When Drogo passes from simple infection, she’s understandably heart broken and decides to throw herself on his funeral pyre with what she thought were calcified dragon eggs and thus her reign is best described as going from one stroke of good luck to another.

Daenerys Targaryen is the Best hope for Westeros but the Worst Manager in Real Life 3Daenerys Targaryen is a Terrible Leader in Real Life

1. She believes her own legend and birthright. Perhaps its the fault of her brother Viserys or the many courtiers who fawn and seek the fame of her Targaryen name to further their own agendas but she’s bought fully into her own mythic legend as the rightful heir of the throne. Scarily, her victories across the Narrow Sea add to her delusion that she was born to rule the world, King’s Landing, a capitol in Westeros she has never been since infancy nor understanding of the culture. She’s wilfully self-entitled and has no clue that her family name is pretty much the most despised in the land. She believes her own legend so fully, she suffered a near coup d’tat in Meerin ignoring the advice of the nobles to open the fighting pits – Hubris 1 Diplomacy 0.

2. Idealist to the Point of Ignorance. She has strong convictions and that’s great for a leader and goal setting for any military force or young nation. She finds the present status quo of life reprehensible and so, she tells Tyrion of her wishes to destroy slavery, the petty struggles between the Houses and institute a new world order. All fine ideals save for a small matter of execution, she frees a city and then leaves a power vacuum, essentially creating her own Iraqs and Afghanistans  through sheer neglect. Her answer to resistance in embracing the new order is that they can die in their old one. That’s a child’s temper tantrum. Hubris 2 Leadership 0

3. I have DragonsWhoopdedoo. Remember how the Union of Socialist Republics had an immense nuclear arsenal? Remember how it counted for nothing when it disintegrated? That’s Daenerys. First, while as a military weapon, her dragons have no equal, she lacks the ability to control them in any shape or form. Watching her try to control her dragons was like watching Chris Pratt in Jurassic World domesticate Velociraptors, which is to say that you can’t. Instead, her dragon flies around the countryside eating sheep, small children and generally demoralising the population. Hubris 3 Dragon Control 0

Daenerys Targaryen is the Best hope for Westeros but the Worst Manager in Real Life 14. She Listens to the flavour of the Week. Installed as a spy for the Iron Throne, Jorah was Danaerys’ constant companion. So, she listened to him and thankfully, he wasn’t a complete moron, so she lucked out. Until she was introduced to Ser Barristan Selmy. She listened to Barristan for a while and when Jorah finally fell out of favour, Barristan was it. Until she met Daario and when she started sleeping with him, he became it. She was literally choosing advisors based on who was available and who she liked rather than for their experience. Worst of all, she only follows advice which matches her preconceived bias anyway. Nevertheless, she meets Tyrion as Varys planned and again, it’s a stroke of good fortune rather than a result of smart decisions. Hubris 4 Decision Making Ability 0

5. Tunnel Vision and Short-sightednessShe doesn’t care about social norms and mores. She ends slavery in a few cities and then when an old learned ex-slave tells her that his life before her was one of privilege and respect; and that life after her was a capitalist free-for-all which lets younger whelps kick his ass from one curb to the next, she practically ignores him. She has essentially changed fundamental political, socio-political and economic structures with a sledgehammer and then literally expects her cobbled patchwork structure to look like Michaelanglo’s David. Again, people who know better point that out but again, she misses the forest for the trees. Hubris 5 Foresight 0

Daenarys makes the worst leader/manager for real life no thanks to her hubris. But we love her anyway.
