The Best Travel Jackets: Nanamica Field Jacket and Massif Officer Coat

My erstwhile colleague at The Rake has covered the best air travel jacket from Gieves & Hawkes before and quite obviously, while most of us don’t quite have his dosh or intend to spend that much on a coat that will take all manner of abuse during a Fellowship of the Ring-esque journey, I have found two that will suit both your budget and my sartorial tastes.

The Nanamica Goretex Field Jacket takes a classic outdoorsy look and blends it with a tailored cut and gore-tex water resistant fabrics. While it’s not quite Roger Moore’s safari jacket in You Only Live Once, it’s more in line with Daniel Craig’s hunting jacket in Skyfall (you know, after it’s been to the dry cleaners).

They essentially took vintage military coats and blended it into a 3-ply composite fabric Field Jacket. The herringbone wool-blend outer is what gives this travel jacket the stylish dressy look while the Gore-Tex layer makes it breathable, windproof and waterproof. The best part is the dense construction, no amount of shoulder slung bags and stuffing into the overhead cabins will ever wrinkle this bad boy. Optimal patch pockets will ensure that your passports, iPods and wallets all stay exactly in place for easy reach.

Nanamica has really paid attention to details with Natural Leather Football Buttons and High Stance Upper collar fastening for gale force wind protection and  they have also seen fit to equip both Front Flap Pockets with Integrated Side-Entry Hand Pockets for those wintery chills. Pop a pocket square into the chest patch pocket and you’re ready to fly.

The Massif J-003 Officer Coat is a modern 5 button roll 2 affair- that is you can pop the collar up and button all 5 buttons on the single breasted placket or put the collar down and wear it blazer style with 2 buttons. The officer style Massif tailoring is slim cut for a tapered fit along your torso with articulated joints for your arms giving you added range of motion. It’s tactical clothing with a tailored look that even Archer (codename Duchess) would approve.

“You’ve got to kick somebody’s ass, get in a car race, go to dinner and then get to the poker game. You can’t change clothes.”

According to Massif VP Scott Branscum, “The way I figure, you’re a spy—you’ve got to kick somebody’s ass, get in a car race, go to dinner and then get to the poker game. You can’t change clothes.”

And he’s right, Massif has built the J-003 with all mods and cons: Four interior security pockets, interior pen pocket, three canted exterior pockets, and signature stealth sleeve pocket. Four-button functional cuffs. Stretch, antimicrobial, moisture management, and water repellent.
